GWR Autocoach

Autocoaches were one of the Great Western Railways experiments. They usually ran in pairs coupled either side of a 14xx class tank locomotive. The loco could be driven from the Autocoach cab via a system of bars and linkages below the floor. At terminals the driver could simply walk to the other end avoiding the need to run the loco around the engine. The design developed from the earlier steam driven railcars which, whilst sucessful in their own right, were difficult to maintain and inflexible in the sense that they were incapable of pulling a train. The model represented here was built around 1929
